BASALT’S MANY NEIGHBORHOODS

 For the past twenty years, Basalt has dramatically grown well beyond the quaint, historic town it still appears to be where most residents were within easy walking distance or a short drive of the downtown core. The town’s boundaries have shifted further south and west while the town continues to expand on many levels. Today there is an abundance of commercial offerings, offices, retail stores, arts facilities, dining, and residential choices in Basalt.

 “In-town” living today consists of the single-family houses and townhomes of Elk Run, the more exclusive River Cove, the luxury condominiums of The Wilds, and many remodeled homes in Old Town, overlooking the downtown area and with mountain views.

 Large private properties and ranches are scattered along the scenic drive through the nearby Frying Pan River Valley leading to the Ruedi Shores subdivision, a short distance to the Ruedi Reservoir. Seven Castles subdivision, a small enclave of homes along the way is set against a spectacular backdrop of red rock and wilderness and is not far from town.

 The Roaring Fork Club, Basalt’s only private residential golf and fishing club, is east of town, and a few miles closer to Aspen. Recent approvals to build thirteen additional luxury cabin-style residences, larger than the original cabins, and will increase the total number of homes there to sixty-four. Second-home owners are the primary target market for these exclusive multi-million dollar properties.

 Basalt’s more recent developments include Southside and Willits. Now connected to the town by an underpass lies Southside, an entire neighborhood of relatively new homes, duplexes, businesses and the site of Basalt High School. But Southside is far from complete. Two new residential proposals are soon to come to fruition. The Stotts Mill project includes 60 single-family houses and 96 multi-family units. A partnership between the Roaring Fork School District and Habitat for Humanity will develop 27 townhomes, half of which will be sold to district educators. Meeting the needs of the growing community is clearly the impetus for these two projects.

 West of Southside, and past the turnoff to Emma with its ranches and properties in a peaceful rural location, are the residential neighborhoods of Willits and the primarily commercial Willits Town Center. Single-family homes and townhouses line the streets of this thoughtfully planned expansive development. The new Park Modern section, on the eastern-most border of the residences of Willits, features sleek, contemporary-style condominiums in a park-like setting with indoor parking, air-conditioning, elevators, private storage units, and many high-end features. Only a few lots in Willits are undeveloped, with several new homes under construction at present.

 Willits Town Center has it all: loft-style condominium living, apartments to lease, multiple restaurants, retail shops, medical offices, banking institutions, Whole Foods, health and beauty services, and entertainment venues. Willits is a vibrant community that meets the many needs of its residents and the Valley population at large. Adjacent to Willits, a mere round-about away, are City Market and Orchard Plazas with many additional commercial choices.

 Finding a home with a Basalt address gets easier and easier with more and more options. Living in the mid-Roaring Fork Valley, equidistant from Aspen and Glenwood Springs, gets better and better.

 EL JEBEL AND WESTWARD:

 Across the highway from City Market and Orchard Plazas are the Townhomes of Shadowrock with its scores of residences including recently built units and with more to come. Many of the three-level homes afford views of Mt. Sopris and are in the $600,000 to million-dollar price range. Though the location bears a Carbondale address, Shadowrock is more accurately in El Jebel, an unincorporated portion of Eagle County. It is within easy walking distance to additional restaurants and businesses on the north side of Highway 82.

 A few miles west, spanning the miles from El Jebel to the town of Carbondale, are several subdivisions where homes run the gamut from the more modest houses along the many streets of Blue Lake, to the townhouses and single-family homes of Dakota and Dakota Meadows, to the estate properties in the more exclusive 300-acre Cerise Ranch development.

 Another luxury subdivision next to the Aspen Valley Polo Club property (formerly Preshana Farms), at the intersection of Highway 82 and Catherine Store Road, Aspen Equestrian Estates, features generous properties along the Roaring Fork River. A small enclave of homes known as Blue Creek is across the road. On the drawing board is a proposal to build a unique facility next to Blue Creek that will combine horse-training and breeding with a residential development adjacent to the river.

 Just past the intersection lies a modest, family-oriented neighborhood, The Ranch at Roaring Fork, adjacent to a popular nine-hole golf course on the south side of Highway 82.

 The wide selection of properties between Basalt and Carbondale provides many options to newcomers and longtime residents alike – to those lucky enough to call the Roaring Fork Valley home.
